"Smoke Woman"
oil on canvas
Interesting story. I actually painted this the first time about six or seven years ago for a school project. In school my friends and I spent far too much time in a small Irish pub in Elora, reading books, drinking coffee, and talking about rediculous mind boggling things which then were hugely important, but now I forget. That's the way it goes though. All of my dear friends smoked like chimneys and I did not. We often romanticized about unknown wonders of life and one day began discussing what in fact, is in smoke. Of course we know the facts, but that's no fun for anyone! So my friend posed his hand just so and the next thing I knew I had a painting of a woman coming out of the smoke. In all honesty, I don't really like this painting so much. It doesn't say anything important, as some have imagined some statement on smoking or deep rooted myth, but just reminds me of some good times. It is nothing like anything I had ever done before and yet it is a favourite of many people and I have repainted it to sell three times already. What can I say? You never know what people see when they look at a painting, but I suppose that's what makes it all so great!!
